The project aims to desalinate 300 million cubic meters of seawater annually from the Gulf of Aqaba and find sustainable solutions to the water shortage, as part of an economic modernization plan adopted by the Kingdom. The project, named the “National Carrier,” will include pipelines for water transportation extending about 445 kilometers and one of the largest desalination plants in the world, providing more than 300 million cubic meters of drinking water annually for approximately four million people in various governorates of the Kingdom, which is among the five most water-scarce countries in the world.<\/p>\n
This is the largest infrastructure project ever being built in Jordan, as it includes an advanced system for seawater intake from the Gulf of Aqaba coastline, the establishment of an advanced desalination facility using reverse osmosis technology, a process for purifying and treating seawater to turn salty water into potable water, and a water transfer system extending approximately 450 kilometers to reach Amman, along with high-capacity pumping stations and renewable energy components.<\/p>\n
Through the project, Jordan aims to secure 300 million cubic meters annually for most areas of the Kingdom and improve water supply in many regions. The project will partially rely on renewable energy in line with Jordan’s goal of generating 31% of electricity from renewable sources by the year.<\/p>\n
The project will be developed as a public-private partnership under the “Build, Operate, Transfer” (BOT) model.<\/p>\n
A consortium of Meridiam and Suez will be responsible for financing, designing, building, operating, and maintaining the system for the duration of the concession, which includes the construction phase and 26 years of operation. Upon the completion of the concession period, the ownership of the project will be fully transferred to the Ministry of Water and Irrigation to become a national asset of Jordan.<\/p>\n
The project is expected to meet the water needs of approximately 4 million people annually, making it one of the sustainable initiatives aimed at reducing pressure on Jordan’s groundwater and surface water resources. This will contribute to the natural replenishment of over-exploited aquifers and ensure a reliable water supply in most parts of Jordan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
